Traditional Food in China

Hot Pot


In China, one of the most popular dishes is the hotpot. The hotpot (火锅) is when there are different types of broths prepared in a pot, and meat slices, vegetables, noodles are cooked in it. Usually, there are 2 or more sections in a pot, where the different types of broths can be separated. The most common types of broths are original, spicy, mushroom, and tomato. Types of meat are usually beef, lamb, pork slices, or fish balls. There is a very wide range of vegetables that can be consumed. Most of the time, at traditional hotpot restaurants, the noodles are created when the chefs, by hand, stretch the noodles until they are thin enough to be eaten. These main dishes are often dipped in sesame sauce, with garlic, crushed peanuts, fermented bean curd, chive flower, or coriander and green onion.


Dumplings


Another of the most widely recognized Chinese food is dumplings. Dumplings (饺子) contain minced meat wrapped in thin dough. Dumplings have a very long history of 1800 years in the Northern area of China. Popular minced meat fillings in dumplings are beef, pork, shrimp, or simply vegetable dumplings. Traditional dumplings are cooked by boiling them in a pot, multiple at a time, depending on the size of the pot. There are dumplings sold nowadays, but people still handmake dumplings. First, the dough has to be prepared, then rolled into thin pieces. The minced meat or fillings of the dumplings should be mixed together. Then, the fillings are placed onto the pieces of dough and wrapped. Dumplings are typically made and consumed together by the family on Chinese New Year’s Eve.


Peking Roasted Duck


Known by its name, Peking Roasted Duck (北京烤鸭) is a famous dish from Beijing, China. This type of roasted duck is recognized by its crispy skin and notable flavor. The duck is usually presented in a form of sliced duck meat, with very thin pancakes on the side to wrap the duck meat around. The side dishes include cucumber strips, preserved radish strips, hawthorn strips, chopped green onion, garlic, and sweet bean sauce.


Yangchow Fried Rice


Yangchow Fried Rice (扬州炒饭) is a classic type of fried rice from Yangzhou, China. The city is known for having chefs that are professional at frying rice. Apart from rice, the standard ingredients of this friend rice are shrimp, carrot, mushroom, corn, and egg. The ingredients are all cut into small pieces, then, they are stir-fried to become a golden yellow color.


Soup Dumplings


Soup Dumplings (小笼包) are another type of famous Chinese steamed dumplings. The filling inside is usually pork, wrapped in a cone-like shape. Inside the wrap, there is a gelatinized broth contained, which melts when the soup dumplings are heated. When someone eats the soup dumplings, and the wrap is a bit open, the broth filling leaks out, which is the specialty of this dish. However, this dish is one of the most time-consuming to make out of scratch.


Wontons


Wontons (馄饨) are a dish with fillings wrapped in a shape similar to a triangle. They are typically served in soup, sometimes alongside noodles, or simply deep-fried. The most common fillings are minced pork or pieces of shrimp. Wontons are traditionally for eating on the day of the winter solstice.


Spring Rolls


Spring Rolls (春卷) were originally a Cantonese dim sum. The fillings of vegetables or meat are wrapped together in spring roll wrappers into a cylindrical shape. By frying the spring rolls, they become a golden yellow color.
