It is also known as the Medical College Admission Test or MCAT. It is a standardized multiple-choice examination required for admission to most medical schools. The exam is intended to assess people's ability to solve problems, demonstrate critical thinking, and examine their understanding of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts and principles.
The MCAT is used by admissions officers to predict your success in medical school. The exam focuses on skills you will use when you get there, including basic science, verbal reasoning, and writing. The MCAT is a 7½ hour, computer-based test that has the reputation of being one of the most challenging standardized tests. It is offered around 15 times per year, and it costs $315 for the initial registration.

The Difference Between SAT and MCAT
The SAT assesses knowledge learned in high school, whereas the MACT assesses knowledge, and specifically knowledge related to medicine, learned in college.
Who Can Take the MCAT?
AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) states that "you can take the MCAT if you plan to apply to a health professions school." Anyone interested in any field of medicine can take the MCAT; this includes all pre-medical students.
Scoring System
The current version of the MCAT exam was officially launched in April 2015. Scores are divided into four parts:
Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
There is a maximum score of 132 in each of the four subsections and a maximum score of 528 in total. The AAMC reports that the average MCAT score for students accepted to allopathic medical schools in the United States was 511.2. One needs a score of 508 on the MCAT to be competitive for medical school admission. However, there are exceptions to this rule, A MCAT score of 518 or above is considered exceptional and makes you a very competitive applicant. A medical school's admissions committee will review applications if an applicant earns above a certain MCAT score. This information is not always made public by medical schools. Earning the highest MCAT score possible with the lowest number of exam attempts is ideal for getting into medical school. MCAT exam scores are required for admission to most U.S. and Canadian schools. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores more than three years old.
When do You Take the MCAT?
In accordance with Kaplan's recommendations, the best time to take the MCAT is the year before you intend to start medical school. Also, it's best to start planning your MCAT preparation three to five months before it's time for the test.
